Professional Bio

Viktorya Vilk (she/her/hers) leads PEN America’s U.S. safety and journalism programming, which: equips writers and their allies with safety training and resources; partners with media organizations and publishers to strengthen safety infrastructure for staff and freelancers; and conducts research and advocacy on platform accountability, press freedom, and local news. Vilk has written for the Miami Herald, Washington Post, Slate, Ms. Magazine, and Harvard Business Review and regularly provides commentary for news media, including PBS Newshour, NPR, AP, New York Times, and Los Angeles Times. A sought after speaker, she has presented at RightsCon, International Journalism Festival, and Online News Association, among others. Vilk completed her graduate degrees with honors as a Marshall Scholar at the University of London and has over fifteen years of experience working in nonprofits to expand access to the arts and defend creative and press freedom.
