AI Innovator Collaborative – August 2026: AI Policy in the Newsroom
Zoom
Event Details
Join us for the August edition of the AI Innovator Collaborative, a monthly gathering for ONA members experimenting with AI!
This month's meeting will take a deeper look at AI policy in the newsroom, and for that we'll be joined by Cynthia Tu, Data Reporter & News Technology Specialist at Sahan Journal, a nonprofit newsroom dedicated to reporting for immigrants and communities of color in Minnesota, and Matt DeFour, State Bureau Chief for Wisconsin Watch, the state's oldest nonprofit investigative and community forward newsroom. Cynthia is currently working on updating Sahan Journal's well-developed AI policy guidelines to cover new uses and tools, and will discuss how and how often to undertake and what to consider in that process. Matt leads his organization's AI Committee, developing a policy that will help guide journalists in their ethical use of artificial intelligence tools.
For newsrooms now using AI for wide variety of editorial tasks, from transcription and translation to data analysis and headline writing, maintaining credibility and trust with audiences requires transparency and communication. This open, collaborative conversation will discuss best practices, privacy concerns, accountability mechanisms, disclosures, and guidelines for use.
How to register: This event is open to members of the AI Innovator Collaborative, which is free for ONA members to join. See the steps here to join the Collaborative.
